Walpole Cottage was originally part of a working farm - the residence of a series of local sheperds since its construction in the late 18th century. It was converted into a holiday cottage in 2008, carefully preserving all the important rustic features that make the cottage such a charming place to stay. The original stone walls stand dry and solid, and both the beamed ceilings and the wooden floors have been painstakingly recreated following the original choice of materials.

St John's in the Vale is such a charming spot that you may not want to venture further afield, but if you do, there are numerous attractions in the area. The Castlerigg Stone circle - an impressive neolithic monument - is only a short walk away. Ullswater - the favourite lake of many who know the Lake District well - is only just down the valley. Hikers looking for a challenge will not want to miss an ascent of Helvellyn via its notorious Striding Edge (although do take care).
